Making Connections
As a reader, we often make connections to what we are reading. We may read something and make a personal connection, a text to another text connection or a text to world connection. In a recent mini-lesson, Mrs. Smith read the story book, Alexander and the Horrible No-Good Very Bad Day and students shared their personal connections with the main character.
Everyone has a bad day sometime....have you ever got gum in your hair? Have you ever got excited about a new pair of shoes you are trying on to find they don't have your size? Have you ever had to go to the dentist and you are the only one between your siblings that had to get a filling? Well....if you have, you made a personal connection with Alexander! As we daily read, we are in search of connections with what we are reading. We are creating a paper chain of connections. Mrs. Smith is certain
that we can connect a chain around the perimeter of our classroom.
Inferring as a Reader
Wise readers also infer as they read. They take what they know about a topic and put it together with what they are reading. We will be learning about inferring in our mini-lessons and practicing as we read.
